It is colorful, designed by one of the world’s most famous cartoonists, and is taking the Gospel to millions of people each year. It is The Story of Jesus. Shortly after David C Cook released the award-winning Action Bible, church leaders in South America asked whether its captivating design could be adapted into a short version they could use to start conversations about faith with people in their neighborhoods. In less than a year, The Story of Jesus was translated into 11 languages. It is quickly spreading worldwide. Churches in Brazil alone organized to deliver The Story of Jesus in Portuguese to more than 6 million households! This is proving to be one of the most effective evangelism tools in a long time. Local churches are equipped in a new way to reach out to their neighbors.
Sergio Cariello, who drew many of the images found in Marvel and DC Comics, crafted the evocative pictures that draw people into this compelling story of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. The presentation concludes with a step-by-step description of how to put faith in Christ. Sergio understands the power of pictures to reinforce the message because when he was a child growing up in Brazil, he was nurtured in his faith with the Picture Bible from David C Cook.
At first glance, the design of The Story of Jesus might appear to consist of Bible stories for children only. In fact, we are learning that it is impacting adults too. When someone visits a home offering it to children, a parent or other adult reads it first. And in areas where literacy is low, it is common for the children who are in school to be the only family member who can read. They are asked to read it to everyone in the household. Experience is showing us that each copy of The Story of Jesus is effectively presenting the Gospel to at least two or three people.
The Story of Jesus arrived at a time when churches all over the world are waking up to the reality that the overwhelming majority of people who ever follow Christ make their decision during childhood. Research consistently shows that 80% or more of people who are believers came to faith between the ages of 4 and 14. The Story of Jesus speaks directly to children in this age range and in the most unreached parts of the world, children ages 4 to 14 are nearly half the population.
